De La Rey - Lion of the West
General De la Rey has variously been described as 'perhaps the only man of original genius to emerge on either side in the Anglo-Boer War', 'one of nature’s gentlemen', 'a remarkably fine fellow', 'the greatest natural soldier to come out of South Africa', 'with a face unequalled for antique patriarchal dignity', 'a warrior saint', 'a lion', 'a king' – these have been the assessments made by some famous names.
Although referred to in hundreds of books, this is the first biography of the great Boer General. General LOUIS BOTHA
The Boer race produced many remarkable men, tall keen-eyed and strong, independent, devout, honourable men who lived by the word of God. Such a man was Louis Botha, who had not only all the typical Boer qualities but good looks, charm and intelligence as well.
The combination of these attributes marked him from his early years as a born leader. At the age of twenty-one he had his first taste of fighting when he took part in the last invasion of Zululand, out of which was to come the tiny state called the New Republic. Louis was made a member of the Executive Council, and took his first step into politics. During the Boer war he showed unsuspected qualities as an outstanding soldier and eventually became Commandant-General when he was only thirty-eight. From the time of the Treaty of Vereeniging onwards, Louis, sick of war, though he was to lead his men in 1915 in the conquest of German South-West Africa, worked unceasingly for the thing which had become his ideal – a united South Africa where Briton and Boer could live peacefully together.
As Premier of the Transvaal and later of the Union of South Africa, he struggled to make his vision come true, but he did so at the expense of making many enemies amongst his own people. The Afrikaner Rebellion in 1914 broke Louis’s heart and he was to say afterwards that it was 'the saddest experience of all my life'. But when he died, worn out at the age of fifty-seven, he was mourned by his friends and enemies alike, for South Africa had lost one of her greatest leaders.
Johannes Meintjes has done full justice to his subject and has shown Louis Botha in all his strength and his weakness too. Louis’s tremendous charm shines through on every page. It was a characteristic which gained him many devoted followers, yet filled others with suspicion. But Louis Botha was a truly honourable man, utterly sincere, a good friend to Britain, and above all a man who had a vision in early life which was to make him run a course from which he never deviated.

President Paul KRUGER
The author of this biography of Stephanus Johannes Paulus ("Paul") Kruger is Johannes Meintjes, one of South Africa's most accomplished authors, who was also a highly regarded artist and sculptor. (Meintjes also penned biographies of Louis Botha, Pres Steyn, Genl De La Rey, Cmdt-general Joubert and Gideon Scheepers).

President STEYN
Two great statesmen dominated the South African scene at the end of the nineteenth century. They were Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic, and Marthinus Theunis Steyn, President of the Orange Free State Republic. This is the biography of the last President of the Orange Free State.
He was born a Republican and when he had finished his schooling read law at Oxford. He held no animosity towards Britain or his English fellow countrymen and acted as mediator between Britain and the Transvaal over the Uitlander question. And yet, once the war had been joined, he persevered to the last and refused to agree to peace at the cost of independence even when many of his fellow countrymen were maintaining that the Boer cause was irrevocably lost. Though his health was broken by the war, he returned to play a leading role in the rebellion of his country.
Johannes Meintjes has succeeded in giving us not only a picture of Steyn the man, but of the times he lived in, using them as a framework within which the qualities of Steyn's character and the extent of his influence can be given perspective.

SANDILE - The Fall Of The Xhosa Nation
In this very compelling book Johannes Meintjes provides us with a first full-length study of the Xhosa chief Sandile. Sandile's life-span covers the glory of Xhosa nationhood, the more important wars with the British Colonial Government, the national suicide of the Xhosas and also the tragedy of his personal story.
According to Meintjes, Chief Sandile - although not the most distinguished of them - was one of the last "...... great chiefs. He was a rascal and often weak-willed, but he was also gifted with intelligence and diplomacy and he was a great patriot with a cultural awareness years ahead of his time".
Several portraits - more than of any other chief - of Chief Sandile exist, including some by Frederick I'Ons and Thomas Baines. Reproductions of a number of these are included in the book.
An excellent bibliography and index is provided, as are more than 30 photographs and sketches.

Sword in the Sand - Gideon SCHEEPERS
In this book Johannes Meitnjes traces what really happened to Gideon Scheepers, the gallant 23-year-old Boer fighter who was executed by a British firing squad some months before the Anglo-Boer War was to end. Though nobody knows, since his body was never found, this young heliographer became an almost legendary figure in South African history and his name sacred to many Afrikaners.
As he was considered innocent and had become an idol because of his daring exploits in the Cape Colony, Scheepers' execution caused an outcry throughout the world.
Despite his tragic end and the public interest aroused by the secret and apparently clandestine circumstance of his death, very little is known about his exact movements and experiences. Because of this Meintjes does not refer to this book as a biography but rather as 'a fragment of South African history centred around a key figure'.
Of special interest is the translation of Scheepers' diary - notes written up to hours before his execution.
The execution has now generally been condemned by Boer and Briton as a disgraceful act, but its consequences were more far-reaching than anyone could have foreseeen at the time - Gideon Scheepers took his place in the martyrology of Afrikanerdom.

The Commandant-General Petrus Jacobus JOUBERT
Perhaps because of the enigma of his character as much as the fact that he was overshadowed by his rival President Kruger, there had been little or no serious attempt to assess Commandant-General Petrus Jacobus Joubert prior to this book by one of the best-known biographers in SA, Johannes Meintjes.
Up to the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War Joubert, the hero of Majuba, was second in importance only to Pres Kruger on the Transvaal scene and possibly the most important sphere of his activities came in his opposition to Kruger's Uitlander policies.
As a Commandant-General, Joubert was at heart a pacifist and this was perhaps the reason he never rose to the prominence of a Louis Botha - as Botha said of him "he was incapable of giving a decisive lead when the occasion arose". As a General his skill lay in defence, and in the supreme test of the Anglo Boer War he failed because of his overcautious approach. But shortly before his death he apparently went through a transformation because at the conference of Boer leaders in Kroonstad he urged the Boers to fight in small mobile units and to keep on attacking.
Meintjes gives us a fascinating character study of a man whose complexity was the source of his potential greatness as well of his weaknesses.

Johannesburg in Arms
Subtitled "The observations of a casual observer", this book by Charles G Thomas takes a closer look at the events surrounding the unrest in Johannesburg in 1895 and 1896 - a very exciting period in that city's history.
Thomas indicates in his preface that the book does not "...pretend to be a history of the struggle of Johannesburg to throw off the yoke of Boer dominion, or of Dr. Jameson's daring endeavour to aid the movement. Nor do they attempt to inquire how far that movement was a step towards the unification of South Africa, which is believed to be the policy of South Africa's master-mind. They simply record the impressions of a chance visitor to the town during the period of the rising, and consist for the most part of notes, hastily made during a time of great excitement, of events from day to day."

A Century of Wrong - FW Reitz
This CD contains both the original Dutch version "Een Eeuw van Onrecht" and the English version "A Century of Wrong".
Issued in 1900 by FW Reitz, the book was published with the credo "Audi Alteram Partem" - Let the other side be heard. It was published with the express purpose of giving a voice to the case of the Boer against the Briton.
The book is divided in 9 Chapters, giving outlines of the history of the Cape of Good Hope, the founding of Natal, the Orange Free State, the ZAR and the conventions of 1881 and 1884. The so-called era of Capitalist Jingoism is also discussed in 2 chapters before the book concludes with a chapter drawing together all these facets.
Five appendices are included containing documents such as the proclamation of the annexation of the diamond fields, the Sandriver Convention and dispatches to and from Chamberlain.
Although only 71 pages, this well written book give excellent insights into the period leading up to the Anglo-Boer War.

Published in 1917, this book by Catherine Kolb-Danvin attempts to shed some light on the personality of Cecil John Rhodes. Very well written by a friend of Rhodes, the book shares some wonderful insights.

Hillegas, author of “Oom Pauls’ People” travelled with the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War and had many in-depth interviews with a number of the Boer generals and was present at a number of the battles.
Hillegas’ Preface in part reads as follows :
"In the following pages I have endeavoured to present an accurate picture of the Boers in war-time. My duties as a newspaper correspondent carried me to the Boer side, and herein I depict all that I saw. Some parts of my narrative may not be pleasing to the British reader; others may offend the sensibilities of the Boer sympathisers. I have written truthfully, but with a kindly spirit and with the intention of presenting an unbiased account of the struggle as it was unfolded to the view from the Boer side. Stormberg - A Lost Opportunity
Lieutenant General Sir William Forbes Gatacre came to South Africa, with its reputation of being the grave of many a military career, in the Anglo-Boer war with a service record which made him the hero of British sympathizers. Winston Churchill recalled at the time that in the Sudan he had shown great courage but also a rashness which provoked much criticism. To the Tommies under him he was “General Back-acher”, who drove them mercilessly, but won their respect by his willingness to do everything for which he called upon them, himself.
As commander-in-chief of the British forces in the North Eastern Cape he was opposed by the Boer Generals Olivier, du Plooy, Steenkamp and Swanepoel who built their defensive position around the solidly constructed fortifications at Stormberg Junction left by the Naval Brigade when they evacuated the region. They were content to play a waiting game, taking their cue from the old Boer adage: wait for the tortoise to put its head out and then cut it off.
The result was a battle characterized by strange blunders and confusion on the British side and almost incredible strokes of luck on the part of the Boers. The Boer victory took its place among the series of disasters known to the British as Black Week.
Johannes Meintjies examines the circumstances around the battle and attempts to uncover what really did happen, but his interest lies as much in the individuals who were a part of it and their fortunes, the vagaries of a man and his fate, as in the battle itself

The Africanders - A Century of Dutch - English Feud in South Africa
Published in 1900, this 289-page book gives an extensive overview of the events in South Africa, covering the period of the Dutch at the Cape to 1795, British-Dutch interactions, the First War of Independence, and detailed analysis of the causes of and events leading to the 2nd War of Independence.

To make it more affordable for people wishing to purchase both books, this combination cd has now been released.

Dagboek van 'n Bethulie Kampdogter
Hierdie boek is een van die hartseerstes waaraan ek nog gewerk het, maar tog is dit baie inspirerend. Dit vertel van die wedervaringe van 'n gesin in die Bethulie- en Kabusie kampe - nie net die gesin se wel en weë word bespreek nie maar ook word die toestande en sterftes in die kampe beskryf. Die Bethulie-Konsentrasiekamp sou van al die kampe van die oorlog die hoogste offer moes bring: Nie minder as 1,714 oumense, moeders en kinders het in die Kampkerkhof hulle laaste rusplek gevind nie.
Die dagboek is deur Mev Hamman in Afrikaans verwerk, maar die oorspronklike dagboek (in Nederlands/Afrikaans-Nederlands) word ook ingesluit.

While this book is one of the saddest I've worked on, yet at the same time it is a very powerful and inspiring read. The book relates the journey of a family through the last years of the Anglo Boer War, when they were incarcerated in the Bethulie- and Kabusie camps - not only are the trials and tribulations of the particular family related, but also the conditions and deaths in those camps. Of all the camps, Bethulie was the worst in terms of number of deaths - 1714 women, children and elderly people perished here.
The diary was transcribed into Afrikaans and edited by Mrs Hamman. The original dairy in Dutch is also included.

Four Months Besieged - the story of Ladysmith
In this book the epic siege of Ladysmith is described by the correspondent of the 'Daily News', HHS Pearce. The author notes that "The siege of Ladysmith will long remain in the memories of the age. The annals of war furnish the record of many fierce struggles, in which men and women have undergone sufferings more terrible and possibly shown a devotion rising to sublimer heights. The Rebel Record
This PDF contains a dictionary of the 15,433 Cape colonists who joined the Transvaal and Orange Free State forces as Cape Rebels during the South African War of 1899-1902. It is a book for military historians, genealogists and anybody interested in their family.
It comprises the database that Taffy Shearing created during the writing of her doctoral dissertation of 2004 at the University of Stellenbosch, entitled The Cape Rebel of the South African War, 1899-1902. The PDF file includes all three A4 volumes, 982 pages, and has a full list of sources for further research.
The list contains full names, addresses, and even voter and ward numbers where possible, in order to identify people who had the same family names. Surrendered rebels and those who were captured under arms were first divided into Class 1 (the leaders who were gaoled) and Class 2 (the followers who were disfranchised). It was in 1901 when Martial Law returned that 32 Cape Rebels were sentenced to death by Military Courts and executed for High Treason under arms, to the horror of their families, who thought the Cape Parliament was protecting them. An example from one of the pages is illustrated below.
For the family historian searching for roots in the South African War, there are no hard and fast rules when searching for records. Many rebel prisoners-of-war gave false addresses, and it was only after many years that these were discovered and the corrections made. This is a must for South African genealogists and military historians.

In 1960 approximately 1400 photos by well-known photographer Ambrose Lomax were discovered - a large number of the town Molteno and its people. The powerful images portrayed in this book present a selection of Lomax's work. They depict a gripping portrait of South Africans at the turn of the century. Apart from their cultural-historic value, these photos are of and in themselves a testament to the photographer's skill.

Gen Jan Smuts and his long ride
General Jan Smuts' epic journey during the Anglo-Boer War epic is retold by Taffy and David Shearing, who specialise in the Cape Colony’s involvement during 1901-1902. Follow the Smuts story from December 1900 and discover how this Boer leader, faced with overwhelming opposition from the British, decided to campaign in the Cape Colony. He raced through the Orange Free State and crossed the Orange River on 4 September, 1901.
In twelve action-packed weeks, Smuts and his small force fought the British, hunger and starvation, and endured appalling storms in the Eastern Cape. They reached the Zuurberg without food and ate the toxic cycad fruit. Smuts and many of his men were desperately ill, but survived. He arrived in Vanrhynsdorp with his command intact and for the next four months he waged guerrilla warfare until he was called to the Peace negotiations.
His great reputation as a leader was born on the Long Ride.
Each chapter in the book contains a map of the route that has served as a tour guide to many people. There is also a list and the details of the 323 members of the Long Ride they have been able to trace.
The Shearings have followed the Smuts route from the Orange River to Okiep. They have also traced the routes of Jaap van Deventer and a party of stragglers that included Deneys Reitz.

The full title of this book is "The Boer Version of the Transvaal War: An English translation of all Dutch Official telegrams received in Vryheid during Boer War up to the time when British troops occupied Vryheid."
The translator notes that his purpose was to present the most accurate translation of the official Boer telegrams. These telegrams originated from the ever-shifting seat of government of the ZAR. In Vryheid the Magistrate (Landdrost)commandeered the English printing press to print copies of the telegrams. These were then distributed free of charge in the area. A complete set of the telegrams was preserved, from which these translations were made.

This sought-after book by JP Claasen details the valuable contribution made between 1652 and 1866 by the “sieketroosters” (“comforters”) – men sent to South Africa as assistant ministers to care and provide comfort to the ill.
While their primary task was the care of the ill, these men contributed to the development of the society on many fronts. SJ du Toit van die Paarl (1847-1911)
In literary, political and theological circles SJ du Toit is regarded as one of the most insightful people of his time (NP van Wyk Louw) and someone who in many aspects , was far ahead of his contemporaties (PJ Nienaber). Commandant Johannes Lötter and his rebels
In this interesting book David and Taffy Shearing relate the story of Commandant Johannes Lötter and his Rebels. Lötter was a charming young barman from Rosmead, a junction north of Graaff-Reinet, who decided to fight for the Boer forces during the South African War. Lötter planned a life of high adventure. His recruits were family groups who had no time for military discipline, and standing guard at night was not for them.
When he was driven out of the Sneeuberg, which was his first hide-out, he joined forces with a more experienced commando from the Orange Free State which had invaded the Cape Colony. He was run to earth by Lieut-Col Harry Scobell and 400 men of the 9th Lancers who pursued them relentlessly and captured or killed all 118 men in a shed north of Pearston.
This is a story of Lötter’s last fight, illustrated with photographs of the time. There are details of Lötter’s trial; the entire commando is listed and the story of how they went to Bermuda as prisoners-of-war is also told.

In hierdie uiters interessante boek vertel David en Taffy Shearing die verhaal van Kommandant Johannes Lötter en sy Rebelle. Dit is die verhaal van ‘n jong kroegman van Rosmead (noord van Graaff-Reinet) wat tydens die Anglo-Boere-oorlog vir die Boeremagte geveg het. Lötter het n aksiebelaaide avontuur beplan. Sy rekrute was familiegroepe wat nie veel in militêre dissipline belanggestel het nie.
Toe Lötter uit sy eerste skuilplek in die Sneeuberge verdryf is, het hy kragte saamgesnoer met ‘n meer ervare kommando wat die kolonie uit die Vrystaat binnegeval het. Die kommando is deur Lt-kol Harry Scobell en sy 400-sterk 9th Lancers agtervolg en uiteindelik vasgetrek noord van Pearston. Al 118 kommandolede het òf gesneuwel òf is gevange geneem.
Hierdie is ook die verhaal van Lötter se laaste geveg, ryklik geïllustreer met fotos uit die tydperk. Besonderhede van Lötter se verhoor asook ‘n lys van die hele kommando word gegee. Die verhaal van hoe die oorblywende kommandolede na Bermuda as krygsgevangenes gestuur is word ook vertel.

Generaal Christiaan de Wet, aanvoerder van die Oranje Vrystaat magte gedurende die Anglo-Boere-oorlog, het groot vertroue gestel in die informasie wat deur ‘n jong verkenner, Gideon Jacobus Scheepers, verskaf is. Scheepers was nie alleen ‘n eersteklas telegrafis nie maar ook ‘n heliografis. Voor sy oorplasing na die Vrystaat Artillerie was hy ‘n lid van die klein Transvaalse staandemag.
Tydens die tweede inval in die Kaapkolonie gedurende Desember 1900 is Kaptein Scheepers ook die Kolonie ingestuur en dit is hier waar die jong guerillaleier gesterf het. Hierdie boek vertel die verhaal van sy oorgawe, uiteindelike verhoor en teregstelling. Die geheimsinnige verdwyning van sy liggaam uit sy graf te Graaff-Reinet word ook bespreek. Lig word ook gewerp op sy moeder se lewenslange gespook om haar seun se oorskot op te spoor.
Die boek bevat ‘n lys van die kommandolede, met kort biografieë en heelwat fotos. Elke hoofstuk bevat ook ‘n kaart wat die roete van Scheepers en sy kommando gevolg het, aandui.

General Christian de Wet, leader of the Orange Free State forces during the South African War, set great store in the exact intelligence brought to him by a young scout, Gideon Jacobus Scheepers. Scheepers was a first-rate telegraphist and heliographer who had been a member of the small standing Transvaal Army who was later moved to the Vrystaat Artillerie.
In December 1900 Captain Scheepers was ordered into the Cape Colony during the second invasion. It was here the young guerilla leader’s flame flickered and went out. The story tells of his surrender, eventual trial and execution. The mystery of the disappearance of his body from a grave in Graaff-Reinet is discussed. His mother’s life-long quest to find her son’s remains makes this a haunting, tragic story.
The book contains a list of the Commando members with short biographies and numerous photographs. Each chapter has a map giving the route taken by Scheepers and his Commando.
