In hierdie kort boekie vertel FB Higginson, 'n Britse musiek-onderwyser (later 'n klerk en rekenkundige by die Buffelsdoorn myn), van die mishandeling wat hy net voor die uitbreek van en tydens die Anglo-boereoorlog in die Krankzinnigengesticht te Pretoria (Pretoria Lunatic Asylum, oftewel Weskoppies Hospitaal) ervaar het.
Higginson is in hegtenis geneem omdat daar vermoed was dat hy geweet het waar wapens in bogenoemde myn weggesteek is. As gevolg van sy volgehoue ontkenning van enige betrokkenheid by of kennis van die wegsteek van die wapens, is hy uiteindelik in die Krankzinnigengesticht opgesluit, waar hy volgens sy verklaring aan brutale mishandeling onderwerp is.
Higginson se verslag het ook 'n aantal ander gevangenes se ervarings beskryf, en baie daarvan is deur ander partye bevestig. Die verslag is in 1899 in pamfletvorm deur W.M. Taylor te Kaapstad uitgegee.

This interesting book relates the terrible treatment that the author F.B. Higginson was subjected to in the Pretoria Lunatic Asylum (Krankzinnigengesticht in Pretoria, or Weskoppies Hospital as it is now known), just prior to and also during the first days of the Anglo-Boer War.
Higginson was a British piano teacher who later became a clerk and bookkeeper at the Buffelsdoorn mine. He was arrested after the Jameson Raid on suspicion that he knew where weapons had been hidden in the mine. As a result of his continued and strenuous denials, he was incarcerated in the Pretoria Lunatic Asylum, where he - according to his statement - was the victim of brutal ill-treatment.
His report also contains information on the treatment of other inmates / patients, with some of those abuses confirmed by other parties.
The report was published in booklet format by WM Taylor in 1899.
