Die Konsentrasiekampe. 

Tot en met die publikasie van Die Konsentrasiekampe was daar, soos J.C. Otto in sy voorwoord noem, geen wetenskaplike studie van die Anglo Boereoorlog se konsentrasiekampe nie. Hierdie boek vul daardie leemte op treffende wyse.

Otto het van kleintyd 'n lewendige belangstelling in die konsentrasiekampe getoon en hom beywer om soveel moontlik daaroor te leer. Dit het uiteindelik gelei tot 'n doktorsgraad in die onderwerp. Hierdie uitnemende boek is 'n uitvloeisel van daardie werk.

Hoewel daar gedeeltes van die boek is wat beslis sterk emosies sal wek, is dit nie die doel van die boek nie. Die boek het eerder ten doel die beskikbaarstelling van 'n duidelike, feitelike, goed-nagevorsde en goed-geskrewe verduideliking van die oorsprong, ontwikkeling en impak van die kampe - en die outeur slaag by uitstek in sy doel.

Die boek beslaan 12 hoofstukke wat die volgende insluit:

• Die ontplooing van die beleid van brandstigting en verwoesting;
• die Britse pantservuis;
• die ontstaan van die konsentrasiebeleid; 
• die stigting van die kampe;
• huisvesting;
• organisasie en dissipline; 
• voeding van die kampinwoners;
• sanitasie;
• mediese behandeling;
• die triomf van die Doodsengel;
• sterftes wat afneem; en
• onderwys in die kampe.

Bostaande word opsommend bespreek in die hoofstuk "Besluit", terwyl die maandelikse sensus en sterftes in die kampe in 'n Bylaagaangegee word. Die boek word afgerond met sowel 'n literatuur- en bronnelys en 'n gedetaileerde register.

'n Tiental fotos vul die boek pragtig aan. Hierdie fotos sluit o.a die volgende in: die dodehuis in die Kroonstad kamp, die vervoer van vroue en kinders in oop spoorweg kooltrokke, die kamphospitaal te Kroonstad en huise en dorpsgedeeltes wat in puin gelaat is.

Die Konsentrasiekampe is 'n goed-nagevorste dog uiters leesbare boek oor 'n emosie-wekkende onderwerp in ons geskiedenis en word hoog aanbeveel vir almal wat in die Anglo Boereoorlog in die algemeen of in die konsentrasiekampe in besonder belangstel.

Die Konsentrasiekampe. 

Prior to the publication of Die Konsentrasiekampe there had not, as JC Otto notes in his preface, been any scientific study of the Anglo Boer War camps. This book handsomely addresses that shortcoming.

From a young age Otto took a lively interest in the concentration camps and zealously set about learning as much as he could about it. This eventually led to earning a doctorate in the subject. While this book is based on this academic research, it is written in a highly readable style.

While some parts of the book are quite confronting and emotive, stirring readers' emotions is not the purpose of the book. Rather, it is to make available a clear, factual, well-researched and well-written account of the origin, development and impact of the camps - and it succeeds admirably in that aim. 

The book comprises of the following chapters:

• Die ontplooing van die beleid van brandstigting en verwoesting (the application of the policy of arson and destruction);
• die Britse pantservuis (the British armoured fist);
• die ontstaan van die konsentrasiebeleid (the origin of the concentration policy); 
• die stigting van die kampe (the creation of the camps);
• huisvesting (accommodation);
• organisasie en dissipline (organisation and discipline); 
• voeding van die kampinwoners (feeding the camp residents);
• sanitasie (sanitation);
• mediese behandeling (medical treatment);
• die triomf van die Doodsengel (the triumph of the Angel of Death);
• sterftes wat afneem (declining deaths); en/and
• onderwys in die kampe (education in the camps).

The above is concluded with a chapter titled "Besluit" (Decision), followed by an Appendix which lists the monthly census figures and deaths in the camps. In addition to a comprehensive Literature- and Source list, a detailed register  is also provided.

Ten photos  add some visual impact to the book. These photos include: the hospital and the mortuary in the Kroonstad camp, the transport of women and children in open coal railway cars as well as houses and parts of towns left in ruin. 

Die Konsentrasiekampe is a well-researched yet highly readable book about a very emotive subject in our history, and is highly recommended for those who are interested in the Anglo Boer War in general or in the concentration camps in particular.
