MORKEL A Remarkable South African Family (opdateerd)

  • Britse dragonders gestasioneer in 1795 by rebelse Morkel plase
  • Red Brockman se lewe gedurende ‘n leeu aanval

MORKEL A Remarkable South African Family (updated)

A 289 page book of family history with genealogy to place the people in context. Photos (some in colour), maps, family lines and anecdotes enhance the text. The downloadable product also contains a Morkel Genealogy in the form of a reader-friendly ‘Descendant’s Report’. While incomplete, it is the most comprehensive genealogy of the Morkel family available. An updated gedcom file with the genealogy is also included.

All the Morkels in Southern Africa have descended from Philip Morkel who arrived at the Cape in 1708 as 'constapel' (artillerist) in the Dutch East India ship Oosterstein. Although with a fairly low profile, there are some interesting and remarkable stories to tell about the Morkel family in Southern Africa. They were known during the early 1900s for prowess in rugby, and a hundred years later for cricket. But there is much more –:

  • Hosting 80 shipwrecked crew in 1722
  • Occupying British dragoons posted in 1795 on Morkel farms
  • Founding the town and church of Somerset West
  • Being ostracised for breaking the pledge by feeding starving prisoners on a convict ship
  • Saving Brockman’s life from a man eater lion
  • Being licked in the face by a lion
  • Founding of a breakaway church and much more.
