Will Brooks is op die 16e Januarie 1880 in die distrik All Saints (Birmingham) gebore. Op 13-jarige ouderdom verlaat hy skool om vir 'n familievriend te werk. Na sy 18e verjaardag sluit hy by die Warwickshire Regiment aan en doen uiteindelik diens in Suid-Afrika, Malta, Bermuda en Gibraltar. Met die uitbreek van die Eerste Wereldoorlog word die 34-jarige Brooks opgeroep en tussen 5 Augustus 1914 en 11 November 1918 dien hy as infanteris in die 1ste Bat. van die Royal Warwickshire Regiment en die dagboek dek dan hierdie periode.

Will Brooks was born on the 16th January 1880 in the All Saints district (Birmingham). After leaving school at age 13 to work for a family friend, he joined the Warwickshire Regiment after turning 18 and would eventually serve in South Africa, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar. When war broke out in 1914,  the 34-year old Brooks was called up and served as infantryman in the  1st Bat. of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918.  This diary covers that period of his service.
