Dias, Da Gama en die Khoikhoin: ontmoeting van kulture aan die suidpunt van Afrika

Oor Bartolomeu Dias en Vasco da Gama se omseiling van die Kaap die Goeie Hoop en ook oor die inheemse Khoikhoin het deur die jare talle publikasies verskyn, maar weinig aandag is gegee aan hul ontmoeting aan die suidpunt van Afrika.

Die publikasies van Eric Axelson en WJ de Kock, die voorste Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedskrywers oor die Portugese ontdekkers "om die Kaap", het as grondslag vir hierdie boek gedien, maar daarbenewens is 'n verskeidenheid bronne deur skrywers met uiteenlopende agtergronde en belangstellings geraadpleeg. Hierdie bronne het verdere lig op die ontmoeting en botsing van die twee kulture gewerp.

In hierdie boek ontvou die verhaal van wantroue en misverstande weens 'n gebrek aan kommunikasie, maar ook as gevolg van die diepliggende verskille wat lewens- en wêreldbeskouings betref. Die Khoikhoin en die Portugese se wedersydse negatiewe siening van mekaar was waarskynlik van so 'n aard dat dit verbasend is dat die skermutselinge wat wel plaasgevind het, nie op volskaalse gevegte uitgeloop het nie. Die Portugese owerheid se opdrag aan sy seevaarders om konfrontasie met die inheemse mense te vermy, het waarskynlik hierin 'n rol gespeel, maar moontlik het die inherente vreedsame karakter van albei groepe ook 'n groot bydrae daartoe gelewer.

Uit 'n kultuurhistoriese oogpunt bied hierdie eerste ontmoeting tussen twee uiteenlopende kulture soos dié van die Portugese en die Khoikhoin nie alleen interessante leesstof oor 'n verbygegane era in Suid-Afrikaners se gemeenskaplike geskiedenis nie, maar is daaruit ook lesse te leer vir die huidige tydsvak waarbinne 'n multikulturele land soos Suid-Afrika hom tans bevind.

(Dias, Da Gama and the Khoikhoin: meeting of cultures at the southern tip of Africa)

Several publications are available detailing the seafaring feats of Bartolomeu Dias & Vasco da Gama. Similarly, a number of publications have investigated the Khoikhoin. Very little attention has, however, been given to the meeting of these two cultures at the southern tip of Africa.

The publications of Eric Axelson and WJ de Kock - the leading South African authors on the Portuguese seafarers - served as basis for this book. In addition, extensive use has been made of a range of sources from authors with varying backgrounds, points of departure and interests. The combination of the information gleaned from these sources has allowed Ferreira to shed additional light on the meeting and clash of the two cultures.

This book tells the story of mistrust and misunderstandings which arose not only from a lack of communication but also from deep-rooted differences in world-views. The negative views that the Khoikhoin and the Portuguese had of each other was likely of such a nature that it is amazing that it did not result in full-scale acts of aggression. This was partly due to the Portuguese authorities' directive to their seafarers to avoid confrontation with local cultures. It is also likely that the peaceful nature of both cultures contributed to this in large measure.

From a cultural-historic perspective the first meeting between the widely differing cultures of the Portuguese and the Khoikhoin provides interesting reading regarding a bygone era in the common history of all South Africans. Additionally it provides an opportunity to apply lessons from that period to the present time-frame within which a multicultural society like South Africa finds itself.
