Emma Murray néé Rutherfoord), the daughter of  a prosperous and influential Cape Town merchant, married Rev. Andrew Murray in 1856 and the couple settled in Bloemfontein. The letters in this book not only describe the lifestyle, hardships and family life in the Bloemfontein area between 1856 and 1860 but also expound on a variety of other subjects. These include education, travel, political troubles, the President, the border wars, the life of a preacher and the founding and management of what was to become Grey College. Differences and conflicts between church denominations are covered, as are the toils, troubles and pleasures of life in that period.

This book presents a tremendous insight into life in the Bloemfontein area in the mid 1850's.
